New York State Security Guard Registration Steps
To become a registered security guard in New York State, you must obtain a Security Guard Registration Card from the New York State Department of State (DOS). Below are the steps to obtain your New York State Security Guard registration:
01. Eligibility Requirements
To apply for New York State Security Guard registration, you must be at least 18 years of age, have legal authorization to work in the United States, and meet NYS Department of State background and eligibility requirements (with no disqualifying criminal convictions).
02. State-Approved Training (8-Hour & 16-Hour Courses)
Complete the mandatory 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course at a NYS DCJS-approved school before applying for registration, followed by the 16-Hour On-the-Job Training (OJT) Course within 90 days of initial employment (subject to statutory waivers/exemptions).
03. Fingerprinting & Background Check
Schedule electronic fingerprinting through the state’s designated vendor (IdentoGO) and undergo the required NYS DCJS and FBI background check to verify your identity and criminal history.
04. Application Process (NYS Department of State)
Complete the New York State Department of State (DOS) Security Guard Application and submit it along with your 8-hour pre-assignment training certificate, fingerprint receipt, and required state application fee.
05. Registration Issuance (Valid for 2 Years)
Upon approval of your application and verification of your eligibility, the New York State Department of State (DOS) will issue your official Security Guard Registration Card, which is valid for two years and must be renewed prior to expiration.
06. Ongoing Annual Training & Renewal
Maintain your active unarmed registration by completing the mandatory 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training Course each calendar year at a DCJS-approved school and renewing your DOS registration every two years.
