New York State
Security Guard
To become a licensed security guard in New York State, you must meet specific eligibility criteria and complete a comprehensive training program. The process typically involves the following steps:

Ensure you meet the basic eligibility criteria, including being at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, and having a clean criminal record.

Enroll in a state-approved security guard training program that covers topics such as legal authority, use of force, conflict resolution, and first aid. The training must be at least 18 hours in length and conducted by a qualified instructor.

Submit to fingerprinting and undergo a comprehensive background check to verify your identity and criminal history.

Complete the application form provided by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and submit it along with the required documentation, including proof of training, fingerprinting results, and background check clearance.

Upon approval of your application and verification of your eligibility, you will be issued a security guard license by the DCJS. The license is valid for three years and must be renewed before its expiration date.

Maintain your license by completing 8 hours of continuing education every three years. Additionally, you must adhere to all applicable laws and regulations governing the conduct of security guards in New York State.
